Merry Christmas and Nuts to You!

And I mean this only in the best way, although I guess ‘Nuts to you!’ is usually an expression of anger or dismissal toward someone. I am posting a photo of the nuts I recently bought because unshelled nuts at Christmas remind me of my Grandpa Anderson, who always had a bucket of nuts by his chair at Christmas. The nutcracker in the photo is also his. Otherwise, I don’t know that anyone else in my family is interested in unshelled nuts at all! I imagine we all have Christmas “triggers” that bring back memories of past Christmases and deceased relatives.

I promised you a photo of our badlands cedar Christmas tree when I got it up! Here it is, shown with my decorating team! This year, we did not have our traditional Christmas tree hunt, because the kids and grandchildren had COVID, so they were keeping us ‘oldies’ safe! They went without us, though, so we still have a tree! Just a little bittersweet.....

Speaking of grandparents and Christmas, I will share my Grandma Anderson’s Brazil Nut Cake recipe with you! It is kind of like fruitcake, but I like it much better!

BRAZIL NUT CAKE -MOLLY ANDERSON

2# shelled Brazil nuts

1 C sugar

1 1/2 C flour & 1 tsp baking powder

2# dates

1 bottle red or green candied cherries

Mix, then beat 3 eggs and mix in

(batter is very thick)

Put into greased and floured cake pan and bake at 325 degrees for one hour

If you try it, I hope you like it! You may bring me a piece!

Finally, here is a picture I took of our barn the other morning when I ran outside barefooted and in my nightgown to get a sunrise photo! I am getting a lot of positive feedback on it!
