So much going on-so much to do. Retirement is definitely a journey and an experience I am so very grateful to get to enjoy. I titled this "Back To..." because it is back to school for many, back to work for some, back to sports for the athletes and fans, and on and on. For this old retired lady, it is back to planning my annual calendars and sewing projects, attending grandchildrens' events, getting fall yard work done, scheduling my annual trip to Fargo for a Bison Tailgate Party and Game, helping the guys move equipment and cattle, and helping with the grand kids when needed.
I was thinking about philosophising about 'something' and decided I had better refrain and stick to more everyday subjects-I will give the former some more thought, before I open mouth and insert foot.
As you can see in the picture above, it has been smokey here again this summer. Seems the last three years we have had so very much smoke from fires all around the country. I don't rememer ever having this much and am wondering exactly why there is so much. Is it because we aren't managing the forests, or why? This is certainly not healthy for anyone or anything. Our cars, pickups and trucks are not fouling up our air like all these fires,
Going to the pasture with these two is always an adventure!
Annie, our oldest granddaughter spent a weekend with us recently. She is especially jealous of the other girls' kittens! She is finishing up her undergraduate studies at Moorhead State this fall.
Next week is my turn to host our monthly Bunco get together. We serve a meal and dessert with it and I am having a terrible time deciding what to make. My laziness and ambition are having an argument....have to decide yet today as I am making my Walmart order on line for groceries. People, if you don't do this, you are missing out on one of life's greatest conveniences-maybe the best thing to come out of Covid!
Above are some of my sewing projects. Kalli wanted a sewing lesson and wanted to make scrunchies (I had no idea how, but we looked it up) and she made four of them one afternoon after helping me with yard work. I made a bag for a friend, and she liked it so well, she wanted seven more for friends, so I got that done, too. I also finished and had a couple of quilts quilted-I am thinking I will donate one to the Badlands Ministries Fall Event coming up on the 22nd of this month. This is a fun, worthwhile event, raising money for the youth ministries- there is a delicious barbequedl chicken dinner with lots of great live and silent auction items and a little birdie told me there will be lefse there as well. Which of the two quilts pictured above do you think I should donate?
Books-it is also getting into that season. I don't 'read' as much as I would like to, but I am an avid audio listener when driving. Here are my current recommendations:
I purchased 'Hillbilly Elegy' and have started it-I also watched the movie. Excellent
I thoroughly enjoyed "Remarkable Bright Creatures" by Shelby Van Pelt. A very different perspective narrative-loved it!
"The Ship of Brides" by Jojo Moyes- I enjoyed but didn't "love' it.
"Open Season" by C.J. Box - I different type read for me, but I liked it and have begun my second book by this author, which is "Savage Run."
Also just finished "The Dollhouse" by Fiona Davis. It was pretty good.
You may think this a strange picture for me to post, but I have another new hobby-bird watching. I fed birds this summer and they eat a lot! But our yard, especially now with bird feeders and a bird bath, with all the trees and the creek nearby is a haven to them and we enjoy watching them, especially watching them eat all the insects. We seemed to have very few insects this summer, but we had more birds, especially swallows and mourning doves than we ever remember. The mourning doves were interesting to me because they almost became like pets and procreated abundantly. They are all gone already but I looked up their migration habits and it seems they have left on schedule. The picture above is of young birds waiting for their parents to feed them. Pretty sure they were swallows.
Got a shorter haircut a few weeks ago and am enjoying my new "do." It is pretty easy to get in a rut, and as I told someone the other day, I don't really enjoy getting my hair and nails done and putting on makeup every day and somewhat 'fixing' my hair, I am just determined not to "let the old lady in" too soon! Oh, and BTW, I did go to the shoulder doctor and I did damage my rotator cuff and have some arthritis and wear and tear going on, but he said I could keep on keeping on and I am noticing some improvement weekly. I was glad to hear I don't need an overhaul -yet.
I will just leave you with a couple of fallish images of from Theodore Roosevelt National Park that I took recently. TTFN
